Bridge from First Responder to EMR

Location: Dufferin County; depending on course numbers the location may be Orangeville or Mulmur.

Timing: 09:00-17:00

Successful completion of this course results in a 3-year certification.

Duration 40 hours

First Responder to Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Upgrade Course

This intensive upgrade course is designed for individuals who currently hold a valid Red Cross First Responder certification and are ready to advance their skills to the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level.

Participants will gain the knowledge and practical skills necessary to provide advanced care in pre-hospital settings. This includes sustaining life, reducing pain, minimizing the effects of sudden illness or injury, and supporting emergency medical services in high-stakes environments. This course is ideal for firefighters, police, and emergency service personnel who operate as part of a professional emergency response team.

Course Content Includes:

• Advanced patient assessment and management

• Airway and breathing management including BVMs and OPAs

• Circulatory emergencies and shock management

• Trauma care, including spinal motion restriction

• Pharmacology and assisting with medications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED certification

Accreditation & Standards:
This course includes Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED training and meets the Paramedic Association of Canada’s National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP) for Emergency Medical Responders.

Prerequisites:

• Current (non-expired) Canadian Red Cross First Responder certification

Course Completion Requirements:

• 100% attendance

• Skills demonstrations

• Two evaluated scenarios

• Minimum 75% on written exam

Certification:

• Emergency Medical Responder (3-year Red Cross certification)

• Basic Life Support (BLS) (1-year Red Cross certification)
