When it comes to workplace safety, few things are more essential than proper respiratory protection. Whether you’re a healthcare worker, first responder, construction professional, or anyone working in an environment with airborne hazards, an ill-fitting respirator can mean the difference between protection and exposure.
That’s where mask fit testing comes in.
What Is Mask Fit Testing?
Mask fit testing ensures that your respirator — whether an N95, half-face, or full-face mask — forms a proper seal against your face. Without that seal, contaminated air can leak in, rendering the respirator ineffective.
At Rural Rescue, we use the Qualitative Fit Testing (QFLT) method — an OHSA-approved, CSA Z94-compliant process that uses a harmless test agent (such as Bitrex or saccharin) to determine if the respirator fits correctly. During the test, participants complete simple exercises while breathing normally. If the agent can be tasted or smelled, the fit isn’t tight enough — and adjustments are made until it is.
Who Needs Mask Fit Testing?
Mask fit testing is required for anyone who uses a respirator in their workplace under Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). This includes:
-
🏥 Healthcare and dental professionals
-
🚒 First responders (paramedics, firefighters, police)
-
🧰 Construction and trades workers
-
🧪 Laboratory and research staff
-
🧹 Cleaning, maintenance, and industrial employees
-
🏫 School board, college, and daycare employees working in higher-risk environments
Testing must be completed every two years or sooner if there are changes to the mask model, the worker’s facial structure, or if the employee’s role changes.
